I based Åse’s appearance of of Nøkken from Scandinavian folklore. I compare Åse lot with folk myths and creatures, most specifically with changelings. But Nøkken is also a good comparison. With it being associated with water and shape shifting.

I also like the symbolism of Åse kind of embracing the dark and the water. He isn't a naturally mean or bad person I think but he has been treated like an outsider most of his life, which was very dehumanizing for him. After he ran away from home and lost all the people in his life that actually treated him with love and respect he just gave up and accepted his own inhumanity. Being in the water kind of symbolizes him reclaiming the darkness and surrounding herself with it.

The composition itself is based on this Theodor Kittelsen illustration. This was especially fun for me because I was personally horrified of Nøkken when i was little. It didn't help that I grew up near a lake. The Kittelsen painting being a big reason why it freaked me out so much.

Where's the rest of Marianne's family? What is her relationship with her brother (both when Marianne was young and now, when they're adults)?

Hi, thank you for the question! Sorry it took me awhile to answer life and procrastination got in the way 😅 but here we go:

So the relationship with her brother, Sebastian, has always been strong even as kids. Despite an 8 year age gap, Sebastian adored his little sister taking care of her (practically raising her) since their parents were always too busy with their own business deals.

They left their grandmother back in Còrdoba and the family had moved to Florida making their own arrangements in selling illegal wine.

While young Maríanne was in her own world, Sebastian was always suspicious of the men that would come around their house and chat with his parents. The young boy always had a feeling that things wouldn’t end well.

To this day, he hated how right he was…

As adults they went their separate ways. They still write letters to each other on occasion to see if the other is still alive and the update in each other of their daily lives.

However, the letters tend to get lost (sometimes) since running under an alias can confuse the mailman.

Translation: Greeting/Hello from the window!

I was inspired by this photograph to draw something including Åse and her mom. They had a morning ritual where Åse would sit on the windowsill and Solveig would brush her hair. Åce is a morning person and would be raring to go while his mom was still waking up and sipping coffee.

I wanted Åse to look like hes waving his hand so enthusiastically that he might wall of which Is why Solveig is keeping her hand around him ready to catch him if he falls of. I also wanted Solveig to look a lot more tired that Åse. Shes more hunched over her hair isn't properly set up and her eyes are tired. In comparison to Ace who is wide awake and smiling. In the color version of the picture I made them wear green clothes even though their primary colors are red to make the stand out from the brownish red wall more.

Painting of Maríanne I wanted to surprise the wonderful @ahhhh-118 with! Except not really because they already knew since I asked xD But I mean, how could I not!? A Latinx traveler that dabbles in boxing in her free time?! Ummm yeah…that’s queen material right there.

Drawing a new character really helped me step outside of my comfort zone, it was so lovely! I might have to start harrassing more of my mutuals and followers to let me draw their OCs to help me learn. Maybe I’ll start an OC of the Week! Haha that’d be great.

Well with Maríanne’s tail, she was born like that. I based off of an American Bobtail Calico.

She gets the tail from her dad’s side! (He’s like in the right corner of the image you were talking about) don’t know if that’s how cat genetics work, especially since her brother and mother have longer tails but oh well :D

There’s still more of her backstory I have yet to reveal but hopefully, I’ll have more time to put more out there! ✨
