Rita Miljo, Baboon Rescuer, Dead From Fire That Ravaged South African Sanctuary She Built

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Conservationist Rita Miljo, who cared for and reintroduced packs of baboons back into the wilds of South Africa, died in a fire that destroyed much of the headquarters of the sanctuary she built, a sanctuary official said Saturday. She was 81.

Miljo died Friday in the small apartment she kept above the clinic of the Centre for Animal Rehabilitation & Education in the bush of Limpopo province, said Karl Pierce, a director with the sanctuary. With her at her death was Bobby, the first battered Chacma baboon she ever rescued and nursed back to health in 1980 after spiriting her away from a national park without a permit. Bobby also died in the fire, along with two other older baboons that stayed in her apartment, Pierce said.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. Friday after volunteers and workers left the center for the evening, Pierce said. No one else was injured in the blaze, which consumed the clinic, offices and a house on the property, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of Johannesburg. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

While Miljo no longer ran day-to-day operations of the center, which cares for more than 400 baboons, she remained a constant presence and a figurehead for the organization she founded in 1989.

“Everybody’s still in shock about this,” Pierce said.

Born in Germany in 1931, Miljo came to South Africa in the 1950s. In a 2008 article about her in The Washington Post Magazine, Miljo said helping baboons taught her “why people behave the way they do.”

“Chimpanzees can be deceitful, just like humans, whereas baboons haven’t learned that yet,” she said at the time. “So what you learn from the baboons is the truth about yourself. Chimpanzees have already learned to find beautiful little excuses for their behavior.”

In South Africa, baboons have a troublesome reputation. In Cape Town, baboons remain known for raiding cars and frightening tourists. Baboons are a protected species under South African legislation but their aggressive pursuits of food have led to conflicts with residents.

Miljo nursed orphaned and injured baboons back to health, then pioneered ways of reintroducing whole troops of cared-for baboons back into the wild, her center said. In 1994, the center successfully released ten hand-reared baboons back into the wild. A year later, 70 percent had survived and integrated back into the wild population, the center said, a success as many thought the human-cared-for baboons wouldn’t be able to adjust.

Miljo is survived by a brother who lives in Botswana, Pierce said. Her first husband, Lothar Simon, and her 17-year-old daughter died in 1972 in plane crash.

Despite personal tragedies in her own life, she remained focused on her work to help sick and injured baboons. When asked in 2008 where the body of one of the baboons she sheltered would be buried, Miljo offered a quick answer.

“I remember where each one is and that’s where I’m going to be buried, too,” she said.

How Sad! I’ll never get why bad things have to happen to such good people. She had such tragedies in her life. No doubt her and Bobby are in Heaven together and she will be reunited with her husband and daughter. Rest in paradise Rita!

Dog Liberation At Green Hill Breeders In Italy!

Dog Liberation at Green Hill Breeders in Italy!

They have broken through or climbed over the gates networks. They made their way inside the farm and opened the cages, taking away puppies, pregnant and all the little dog beagle who managed to find. It ‘s over a raid in the breeding of dogs to search for the event organized by Occupay Green Hill to ask – again – the closure of the ownership structure of the American Marshall.

The procession started from the parking lot of PalaGeorge, was attended by about 1000 people came from all over North Italy and also from the center. By way of the Craft sepentone deflected Instead of going towards Via San Zeno, the main road leading farm where he was deployed the cordon of police, groups of protesters have cut through the fields and the lanes, coming close to the fences.

From then on, the situation has become confused with groups of demonstrators who tried to open gates in the perimeter and teams of mobile riot police and police deployed to contain them. On the side of the gates, however, the protesters have opened a breach in the fence and broke into the farm, going into the sheds and taking away at least thirty dogs.

At the end of the day, the police had arrested 12 people from the local police station Montichiari were transferred to Desenzano. Some protesters said they had suffered violence by some officials.

Above you see two hands, one of which, belongs to Barcelona. Barcelona is a Sumatran Orangutan, rescued by the Sumatra Orang Utan Conservation Program.

Why did she need to be rescued in the first place?

Her mother was shot. The poachers took her mother’s body to sell the meat and bones, both for consumption and ancient Chinese remedies. Barcelona, on the other hand, was taken and thrown in a steel cage, to be sold as a pet at a local market in Kalimantan, Indonesia. When the Sumatra Orang Utan Conservation Program found her, she was in terrible condition. She was sick and starving from the cramped arrangements she suffered through, as well as the lack of her mother’s milk. Almost taken by the icy grasp of death, Barcelona ended up making a miraculous recovery, and is expected to be released back into the wild soon.

This is just one of many heart-wrenching stories of the Great Apes, and Orangutans in particular. But not all of them have a happy ending. Bornean Orangutan populations have declined by 50% in the past 60 years, and Sumatran Orangutans have had their population cut by 80% in the past 75 years. They have lost much of their past lands, being wiped out in many countries completely. They are now victims of the illegal pet trade, the conversion of forests to palm oil plantations, forest fires, the bushmeat trade, hunting, crop protection (Orangutans are notorious for raiding crops with humans encroaching ever further onto their lands), fragmentation by new roads, and traditional medicinal practices. Only 7,300 Sumatran Orangutans, and 55,000 Bornean Orangutans remain alive and wild. Now compare that to the 7,000,000,000 humans.

This is the last land the Orangutan clings to, the islands of Sumatra and Borneo

In an ever-changing, shrinking world for the Orangutan, they could sure use a hand.

Make a difference. Save an ape.

I’ve just been to see The Dark Knight Rises! And yes, it was terrific. Extremely entertaining and I loved Tom Hardy’s Bane (wow, that was unexpected… *g*). If I hadn’t know it was him, would I have guessed it from watching the film? I think not. Quite a ride, at any rate. :D

Anyway, I’m celebrating this event by posting these favourite happy Tom Hardy gifs.

His Name Is Bandit, And He Was The World’s Heaviest Raccoon From 2001 To 2004 Until His Death. He Was

His name is Bandit, and he was the world’s heaviest raccoon from 2001 to 2004 until his death. He was nearly 75 pounds, three times more than the average raccoon.

Bandit, reported to be the world’s fattest raccoon, has died. The 10-year-old furball stuffed itself on crisps, cheese curls, Froot Loops and chips. Owner Deborah Klitsch said she was gutted. “I haven’t been eating, I haven’t been sleeping,” she said. But Deborah denied that she had overfed Bandit. “He was born with a bad thyroid gland,” she said.

Bandit ended up in the Guinness World Records book in 1999 when he tipped the scales at 52.5lbs. At that point Deborah vowed to lock her kitchen cupboards - but Bandit continued to get fatter and fatter. His minor celebrity status increased further when he landed a slot on cable TV’s Food Network. The raccoon was also a regular at his local Ice Cream World, where he enjoyed blue raspberry Slushes sucked through a straw.

Boss Tim Pitts said: “He was a good customer.”

Katinka Simonse, A 31 Year Old Female Living In Amsterdam, Has Been Killing Innocent Animals And Getting

Katinka Simonse, a 31 year old female living in Amsterdam, has been killing innocent animals and getting away with it. These horrible acts have been looked over because she killed these animals in the name of “Art”.  Katinka owns many animals and keeps them in horrible conditions.  She owns 60 hamsters in balls and remote controlled guineas pigs. She puts day old male chicks through paper shredders. She writes numbers on the snails in her garden to keep count of them.  Although she is not being charged by police, she has angered a good part of the animal loving world and definitely will be charged by them.  However crazy this woman may seem, she has given an explanation to why she does what she does and thinks it is ok.  To view a translated video of Katinka (TINKEBELL) giving her reasons, click here.

The act that has angered most people about this case is, in 2004 Katinka Simonse killed her very own cat and then made it into a handbag.  There was some confusion on how she went about with the killing, but in this video she clearly stated at 1:10 that she snapped its neck. To view that video, click here. It is not translated, but the message is very clear, as she even demonstrates how she did it.  Now you know the acts and the evil, but our work is not finished. Something must be done. We need to urge the Dutch government to obtain Katinka and sentence her to a very harsh trial for animal abuse.

SIGN THE PETITION NOW! “He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

“And Suddenly, I Looked At The Bull. He Had This Innocence That All Animals Have In Their Eyes, And

“And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”  This photo shows the collapse of Torrero Alvaro Munera, as he realized in the middle of the his last fight… the injustice to the animal. From that day forward he became an opponent of bullfights.

“About Six Weeks Ago At A Zoo In Sochi, Russia, An Amur Tiger - One Of The Rarest Tigers On The Planet

“About six weeks ago at a zoo in Sochi, Russia, an Amur tiger - one of the rarest tigers on the planet - gave birth to a pair of cubs. The zoo, of course, was thrilled, but its joy soon faded - the mother wouldn’t feed her babies. Fortunately, the zoo found a woman, Yekaterina Khodakova, whose Shar Pei Cleopatra had recently had a litter of puppies. Cleopatra immediately accepted the tiger cubs as her own, and began nursing them. Now the Amur cubs, dubbed Clyopa and Plyusha, think they’re dogs.”

Almost certainly the largest of domesticated cats is the Maine Coon.  So named because of an old wive’s tale that they bred with New England raccoons (not true) they are often as big as a dog.
