I love this theory!!! It would make his sudden obsession make much more sense
So all season long it has been nagging me as to why Diego became so obsessed with saving JFK, Iâm sure the writers just thought that itâs enough  for us to believe that itâs because of his hero complex (which itâs part of it Iâm not denying that) still it seemed a bit off character to me. Diego wouldnât obsess about just saving one person when he can save many others, the first thing he did upon arriving 1963 is help a woman who needed help so why the obsession with saving  JFK specially when he knows itâs a historical event that must happen (ok ok every Hargreeves messed with history a little bit, the most goes to Klaus).
His obsession consumed him completely that he cared more about it than actually stopping the apocalypse which is very weird because whatâs the point of saving JFK if the world ends? Wouldnât his hero complex motivate him more to save the world rather than one man (who is destined to die anyways??) the fact that his obsession simply and so very easily  started with watching ONE speech of JFK on TV then took over entirely more so  than actually checking on his siblings (who matter MOST to him) checking if they made it or not, checking if theyâre alive or not, is plainly  way too out of the ordinary behavior  for Diegoâs character, and even realistically to develop that amount of CRAZY obsession it takes MORE than just ONE reminder/one look and he clearly wasnât obsessed with it in S1(he was determined to get revenge/justice from Cha-Cha & Hazel because they killed EUDORA)not even knowing that Five could travel through time has triggered the need to save JFK or any historical figures for that matter.
yet all of sudden we have an out of control obsessed Diego concerned about one person, Â rather helping as many people as he can. I mean Diego was literally arrested the second day since his arrival and was put in an asylum on the same second day where he âruns into Lilaâ
Now we all have been asking how did Lilia was SO NATURAL at mirroring/mimicking the Hargreeveâs powers so very easily specially since it took them years to master their powers  yet Lila seemed to have mastered them even transiting between them naturally without any difficulty as if sheâs been doing it her whole life. Some fans mentioned/theorized that she must have been around one of the remaining  35 children and maybe thatâs the case but if thatâs true then the handler would have killed the parents of that child as well and Lila would have had a sibling or two (the handler said Lila was her only child and Carmichael mentioned only one case so it safe to assume itâs just one case thus one child) also Lila would have mastered that power rather than the Hargreeveâs powers.
The fact that everyone seems to forget is that the handler works in place with unlimited access to a time traveling briefcasesâŚ.
So my theory is this the handler traveled through time with Lila to the Hargreeveâs superhero days and she planted her be close enough of them for her to be able to copy every power they have (maybe even in that bank job we saw in flashbacks in 1x01 or any of their missions where they saved hostages or otherwise) Â then maybe even traveled back in S1 where Vanyaâs powers were unleashed and thatâs how Lila was able to master all of their powers so easily.
When Diego arrived to 1963 she rumored him to be obsessed with saving JFK Â that it drove him crazy, crazy enough to be admitted to an asylum where she was already planted to be there to manipulate him, Â I mean after Vanya was stopped (yet again from destroying the world) he still tried to stop JFKâs assassination and when he âfailedâ the mind control was gone. Â
you know that character you love so much? (you know â the one from that movie you always watch when youâre feeling sad the one from that show youâve seen so many times you can quote the episodes the one from that book or comic youâve read more times than you can count) think about how much you resonate with them how theyâre like a mirror image to the way you see yourself how they empathize with pieces of your soul in ways that a real life human cannot how they feel like a representation of you you see so much of yourself in them and you love them so much so why canât you love you too? if you can find it in you to look past their flaws and see gold shining in their cracks maybe you can do the same for yourself after all if your favorite character is a reflection of you, and you love them more than words can say maybe its possible for you to love you too
