though the great tit is a small bird that isn’t particularly threatening, scientists made a surprising discovery about them: during winter months with scarce food, great tits feed on bats. normally feeding on a diet of mostly insects with added fruits, seeds, and nuts, great tits who were unable to find sufficient food preyed on bats hibernating in rocky crevices within caves. when provided more common food by researchers, the behavior stopped.

For all of it’s macabre feeding habits, the Loggerhead shrike’s song is surprisingly sweet. I’ve been admiring this species for quite some time and I was so thrilled to finally chance upon one in the wild!
