Sometimes it feels like you've lived your whole life in a house that's always a little bit on fire. Like it's usually just in one room and you make sure to wet the walls around it so it doesn't spread and that usually works. You were expected to take more responsibility over fire containment when you were like seven because it's not like you can expect your parents to always be 100% on guard about making sure the whole house doesn't catch fire, and you figure that's just how things are like.

And sometimes as a kid you visit your friends' homes and some of then whisper to you - grimacing with embarrassment - about how they're not supposed to tell anyone this, but there's a whole room in their house that's currently on fire. And you're like yeah it's ok I'm not supposed to tell people about the way our house is a little bit on fire all the time, too. And then you visit some other friend's house and there's no trace of fire anywhere, and you think "wow, these people are really good at hiding their house fire."

And one day you show up to work like "hey sorry I'm late, I forgot to wet the walls before going to bed last night and my whole house burned down", and you're startled by the way people react, acting like that must be the worst thing that has ever happened to you. And you're just like "chill, it's been years since the last time this happened, and it wasn't even that bad this time", and that just makes people more shocked, acting like that's the weirdest and most concerning thing they've ever heard anyone say, which only confuses you more.

And then someone tries to explain to you that people aren't supposed to have an ongoing house fire. Most people actually never experience a house fire in their lives. Like not even once. Not even a little bit. The normal amount of having your house be currently on fire is zero.

          The summer was killing you both there on the track. Fabio was still trying to cool down after training, while you just were there; sitting in the garage, watching your boyfriend, hoping that being under the shelter of the garage would ease the sweltering heat of the sun a bit.

          You were twiddling your thumbs the whole time, as you thought. 

          For a month or maybe two now, you were planning a day to confess to him your biggest secret. You were nervous, moving in your place as if you couldn't stay still.

          “Something wrong?” he asked, feeling that you were… weird.

          “No,” you mumbled, not sure about your words. Trying to repeat your discourse in your mind one last time but forgetting the words. Feeling a knot in your throat, but the need to speak anyway.

          Fabio was just waiting for you to explain what's happening, because he's sure there's something wrong. You two spend so much time together for him not noticing there's something. 

          “You're scaring me…” He laughed softly, a little awkward, starting to worry. “You know you can tell me anything, right? You are my girlfriend, and-”

          “That's the problem” He froze.

          “Huh? Are we– Are we breaking up?”

          “No! I mean– not that part. Uh…” With your gaze fixed on the ground, you take a deep breath before finishing: “I'm– I'm a boy.”

          “Oh.” You couldn't look up. You just were waiting for him to stand up and leave you there, maybe even insult you?

          The silence stretched on forever, and you started to think you might throw up if he didn't act.

          “Uhm. You already chose your name?” 

          “Eh?”

          “Your name. You probably want to choose a new one, no?” You finally look up. He remained a little confused, but sure about his question.

          “That's all?” You asked, probably more confused than him. Why is he still there? Why does he still look at you with kindness and affection?

          “We are still dating?” He added, after a few seconds, thinking. You nodded, still shocked. “Then, I want to know how my boyfriend wants to be called.” Fabio smiled, but it quickly changed when you started to tear up.

          Before he could say anything, you saw how worried he was about saying something wrong, so you spoke up.

          “Sorry. Is not a bad cry, I swear, I'm just so happy.”

          “Oh. It's fine, babe.” He put his arm around your shoulders. Feeling still too hot to give you a proper hug, but the situation warranted it. “I love you, no matter what. No matter if you are a girl or a boy.” And with a kiss, you established a new point in your relationship, knowing that essentially everything remained the same. You are the same. Your love is the same.

          From those younger ages to now, you were always by his side. Maybe not attending every race, but you never forget to fill his inbox with messages from wishing him luck in the morning, relating the whole race on the chat, as if he weren't the one racing, to congratulating him or comforting him at the end of the day. And obviously, tons of calls.

          Now, the Grand Prix of the Americas was next on the calendar, and you already were there, in the United States.

          Enjoying. Walking through the big city, holding hands tightly with your boyfriend. Fabio was all smiles, talking about his plan for dinner.

          You watched him with that warm feeling in your chest that keeps reminding you why you are dating him. That same warmth you felt since the first day. The warmth you feel on your cheeks, too, and that you can't avoid. No matter how much time you were dating him, it always happens, reaching even your ears.

          He obviously notices what he provokes in you, jiggling softly before starting talking about other things.

          "You look exceptionally handsome today," he said, swinging your hands slightly.

          "You say the same every day, Fabio," you laughed.

          "Maybe that's because you look handsome every day, mon beau," he drew you closer to him, gently pulling your hand, to kiss your forehead.

          You couldn’t be happier right now.

          Thinking about how scared you used to be of him breaking up with you after coming out or the fear of starting your transition and that Fabio realized he didn't like you. How he proves to you that you have nothing to fear, because he will always be with you -even joking that you were bound to him forever-.

          None of you care anymore about what random people could say on social media. After so many years of knowing each other, you trust in the other. You trust in you, in your relationship. 

          You were there in every important moment in Fabio's life, as he was there in yours. A whole life shared, and so many years to keep sharing together.
