Harold Halibut

Video game created by @slow-bros is an adventure whose assets were originally handmade to produce a stop-motion feel to the experience:

Harold Halibut is a modern adventure game, with a strong focus on storytelling and exploration. Set in a spaceship, stuck under sea on a distant water planet, you slip into the tiny shoes of Harold. As a young janitor and lab assistant to Professor Jeanne Mareaux, one of the lead scientists on board, he tries to help out in her attempt to find a way to relaunch the ship.

All that can be seen in the game is carefully built in a real-world workshop using classic sculpting, set building and clay and puppet fabrication techniques. We’re not even buying supplemental model train trees or anything.

Our love of stop-motion films, childhood nostalgia and respect for traditional craftsmanship are some reasons for this. Patience and taking a break from an ultra-fast paced digital reality are big factors as well.

The project has just released a kickstarter campaign which has more information, which you can find here

This teenager invented an AI-based app that can quickly diagnose eye disease
This ingenious system is called Eyeagnosis, and Kopparapu recently presented it at the O'Reilly Artificial Intelligence conference in New York.

Her name is Kavya Kopparapu and she’s a 16-year-old high school junior. She just might be a South Asian-American Bill Gates in the making.

Ever wished you could have a few more arms to get stuff done? Researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed Metalimbs. They’re strap-on robotic arms controlled by the lower body.

Adversarial Machines

There’s been some interesting developments recently in adversarial training, but I thought it would probably be a good idea to first talk about what adversarial images are in the first place. This Medium article by @samim is an accessible explanation of what’s going on. It references this talk by Ian Goodfellow, asking if statistical models understand the world.

Machine learning can do amazing magical things, but the computer isn’t looking at things the same way that we do. One way to exploit that is by adding patterns that we can’t detect but that create enough of a difference in the data to completely fool the computer. Is it a dog or an ostrich?

There’s been quite a lot of research into finding ways round this problem as well as exploiting it to avoid facial recognition or other surveillance. And, like I said, there’s been some interesting recent developments that I hope to talk about here.

Imaginary Soundscape

Online project from Qosmo generates ambient sounds to Google Streetview panoramas through Deep Learning processes, interpreting the visuals for appropriate sounds:

“Imaginary Soundscape” is a web-based sound installation, in which viewers can freely walk around Google Street View and immerse themselves into imaginary soundscape generated with deep learning models.

… Once trained, the rest was straightforward. For a given image from Google Street View, we can find the best-matched sound file from a pre-collected sound dataset, such that the output of SoundNet with the sound input is the most similar to the output of the CNN model for the image. As the sound dataset, we collected 15000 sound files from internet published under Creative Commons license and filtered with another CNN model on spectrogram trained to distinguish environmental/ambient sound from other types of audio (music, speech, etc.).

You can try it out for yourself here, and find more background information here

PewDiePie, YouTube’s biggest star, is leaning into his new, far-right following

When Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg, YouTube’s most lucrative, popular superstar, uploaded a video featuring a banner with the words “Death to all Jews,” along with a man dressed as Jesus saying, “Hitler did absolutely nothing wrong,” he insisted it was jokes made in bad taste.

After losing his partnership with Disney, Kjellberg apologized, saying he was just poking fun at the “modern world.”

But attempts to distance himself from his message didn’t deter the so-called “alt-right” from accepting him as one of their own, nor did Kjellberg’s insistence that he wanted nothing to do with them.

Kjellberg may not support them, but in the few short months since his anti-Semitism scandal, far-right celebrities have become Kjellberg’s favorite new bedfellows. Read more (7/26/17)
