What is one of the scariest movie scenes you know? For me, it has to be the subway peddler scene from THE WIZ (1978), one of my all-time favorite films. It’s a slow, wordless nightmare, with no payoff: the last time we see the clown puppets, they’re still nonchalantly roaming the subway, looking for prey.
When Dorothy and her friends flee up the stairs, the patterns on the floor look like pools of blood.
The Horned King animatronic in Disneyland, Tokyo. Part of the finale to the Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour, the attraction was one of the few instances of Disney acknowledging THE BLACK CAULDRON it seems.
The attraction lasted from 1986 to 2006.
Concept drawings by H.R. Giger for Alejandro Jodorowsky's unrealized DUNE. 1970s.
Hospital de Bonecas, a doll hospital/store in Lisbon, Portugal.
Promotional art by Mark Stutzman for JURASSIC PARK (1993).
Early designs and sketches of Wallace and Gromit by their creator, Nick Park.
On my blog I occasionally feature first/early versions of famous characters, as that somehow fascinates me. The first seed, the first spark. A few lucky lines on a piece of paper.
Animation drawings from the “Mr. DNA” sequence from Jurassic Park (1993).

The neon-lit Gotham City of BATMAN FOREVER (1995). Constructed mostly from matte shots and miniatures, with a splash of CGI.
The Gotham of these films resembled Blade Runner’s LA mixed with Dick Tracy’s candy-colored metropolis, with some seriously huge statues. The films themselves have no weight of course (they are parodies), though I enjoy the scenery and the art.
British children’s TV 1970s-1980s.
Henry’s Cat, Chorlton and the Wheelies, Roland Rat, Button Moon, Postman Pat, The Flumps, Rentaghost, The Wombles, Fingermouse, Bagpuss.
Art by Tim Burton for some of his films. They’re obvious, aren’t they? Except maybe image 4, which is a sketch of villain Brainiac for Burton’s unproduced Superman film; and image 8, for BEETLEJUICE. There’s Sally and others from NIGHTMARE, the Joker, the Headless Horseman, Tweedle Dee/Dum (it’s the same drawing), Batman.
(The last image isn’t for any film, it’s an untitled drawing from circa 1980. But hey.)
