Caterpillars are juvenile butterflies and they are awfully hungry. These little guys are going to one day turn into Monarch Butterflies. Until then, they'll be in the SNC's caterpillar home before being released into our butterfly gardens.

Last year our buddy Fitz needed emergency surgery for a broken arm. Thanks to some incredible donors, he is fully recovered and looking forward to a better 2021. Here he is trying to sniff out extra treats.

Ewok, the eastern screech owl, is a permanent resident at the SNC due to an eye injury that would prevent him from thriving in the wild. He is a fully grown eastern screech owl, even though their small size leads many to believe that they are juveniles.

The interesting coloring of their feathers is camouflage adapted to blend in with the base of trees.

And yes, we name all of the Eastern Screech Owls we care for after Star Wars.

Walking Between The Rolling Clay Hills At Petrified Forest National Park In Arizona, You Can Stumble

Walking between the rolling clay hills at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, you can stumble onto a scene that looks like a lumberjack went mad. But this wasn’t the work of an axe or saw. Over 200 million years ago, fallen trees washed into an ancient river system and were buried quickly enough that oxygen was cut off and decay slowed. Minerals, absorbed into the porous wood over thousands of years, crystallized and replaced the organic material forming what we call petrified wood. The crystals are hard and brittle, fracturing easily when subjected to stress. Over time, the still buried petrified trees broke like glass rods – giving the appearance today of logs cut with a chainsaw. Photo by Jacob Holgerson, National Park Service.

As Of September, The Sawgrass Nature Center And Wildlife Hospital Has Treated Over 800 Wild Animals.

As of September, the Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital has treated over 800 wild animals. This is a 20% increase from last year’s total intakes. While we can’t be completely sure, we assume the increase is due to other local nature centers and wildlife hospitals closing down and redirecting traffic to us, as well as COVID-19 causing more people to stay close to home.

The more time people spend at home, the more time they have to notice all the native wildlife running around their backyards.

Our resident Barred Owl did an impressive display today of how owls can turn their heads up to 270 degrees. This is due to a special adaptation on their vertebrae.

Barred Owls are native to Florida, but this one cannot be released back into the wild due to a permanent injury. He would not be able to survive in the wild on his own. Instead, he now has a happy home with dedicated care takers and sometimes makes himself visible to the public as an educational ambassador.

“Barred Owls are easiest to find when they are active at night—they’re a lot easier to hear than to see. Visit forests near water (big bottomland forest along a river is prime Barred Owl habitat) and listen carefully, paying attention for the species’ barking “Who cooks for you?” call.” - The Cornell Lab https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barred_Owl/overview

I’ve Said It Before, And I’ll Say It Again: WILDLIFE REHABBERS ROCK! This Nestling Hawk Was Found
I’ve Said It Before, And I’ll Say It Again: WILDLIFE REHABBERS ROCK! This Nestling Hawk Was Found

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: WILDLIFE REHABBERS ROCK! This nestling hawk was found on the ground at my work, we scooped him/her up, and got him to a rehabber in about an hour. The dedication to wild critters is remarkable, and it’s pretty impressive how people make themselves immediately available for the sake of animals.

This African Spur Thigh Tortoise is named Bubba and he is a permanent resident at the Sawgrass Nature Center. He was previously kept as a pet, but his owners did not realize that he would get this large. And since he is an exotic species to Florida, he is non-releasable.

The African Spur-Thigh is a native species of tortoise to Northern Africa, specifically along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. They dig burrows in the ground to spend the hottest parts of the day in. This is known as aestivation.

Fun fact: The African Spur Thigh Tortoise is the third largest tortoise in the world. Surpassed only by the Galapagos Tortoise and the Aldabra Giant Tortoise.

sawgrassnaturecenter - Sawgrass Nature Center
Sawgrass Nature Center

The Sawgrass Nature Center (SNC) is a nonprofit located in South Florida. Our mission is to educate the public about native wildlife and environmental stewardship. We also rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured, orphaned, or sick wildlife. Animals that cannot be released due to permanent injuries or disabilities are given a forever home on site with animal keepers that know how to properly care for them. We are able to operate due to donations from generous patrons. If you are interested in helping us further our mission, check us out at:  https://sawgrassnaturecenter.org/
