Why you should read A Far Wilder Magic :
atmospheric and cottage-core, set in a small seaside town that leaves you longing to visit
Alternative 1920s
Definitely inspired by The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. And while the writing styles are different, the vibes are the same.
Jewish coded MC who has to face discrimination and hate for her identity. Other religious and ethnic disparities.
Realizing and leaving abusive relationships, and all the complexities that go along with such a topic
Sunny/happy-go-lucky boy and grumpy/standoff-ish girl
the romance is lovely and the characters help themselves grow and evolve as people
old manor house
alchemy! and a hunt for a mythical creature that our two characters team up for!
this book is so soft it's like hearing a piano playing from a distant room
but I'm appreciative of how it takes on and handles the more difficult and uncomfortable subjects
considering how strong the motif of motherhood and brutal birth/rebirth is in chainsaw man (especially with fujimoto pointing out that chainsaws were originally created in order to assist in difficult births), denji’s act of slashing makima apart with his chainsaw, and then eating her out of love (in his own words “becoming one with her”)…… the way it leads to nayuta’s “birth”……….. as well as the fact that he becomes a parental figure to her………….. and his deciding to break the cycle of abuse that both he and makima endured………….. and how makima herself acted as an abusive mother to denji as well as a toxic romantic/sexual partner……………. really hard to not read it as like. a metaphor for nayuta being denji and makima’s child, with denji simultaneously being a father and mother to her. like literally accepting makima’s impact on him and his feelings for her, taking on her ‘sins’ and vowing to do better, including her role as a *mother* to their metaphorical child.
Listen. I had to.
