The kalij pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) is a pheasant found in forests and thickets, especially in the Himalayan foothills, from Pakistan to western Thailand. Males are rather variable depending on the subspecies involved, but all have an at least partially glossy bluish-black plumage, while females are overall brownish. this steller’s jay was spotted in california. normally, steller’s jays have a deep blue body, with a black head and neck. this bird has leucism, a genetic mutation that causes a reduction in pigments. it can present in many different ways; some birds have white patches and a ‘pied’ look, while others look faded like this bird. x
the bare-shanked screech owl is a large owl species found in mountainous ranges of costa rica, panama, and a small portion of colombia. they feed primarily on large insects and small mammals such as shrews. these owls are surprisingly social and spend their lives in family-sized groups, even during breeding seasons. males and females have no differences in plumage, but the female’s call is higher-pitched.
