Northern White Rhinoceros

Northern White Rhinoceros

Northern White Rhinoceros

Poachers reduced their population from 500 to 15 in the 1970s and 1980s. From the early 1990s through mid-2003, the population recovered to more than 32 animals. However, since mid-2003, poaching has intensified and further reduced the wild population

Since 19 March 2018, there are only two Northern White rhinos left, the females Najin and Fatu, mother and daughter, making these subspecies functionally extinct. The two females belong to the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic but live in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya and are protected 24/7 by armed guards.

The last male, Sudan died due to an infection in his right hind leg. He was euthanized on 19 March 2018.

Recent studies suggest that it might be a separate species from the Southern White Rhino. Studies haven’t concluded.  *References: phys.org/news/2019-08-scientists-closer-northern-white-rhino.html https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Northern_white_rhinoceros

Oliver's Warty Pig / Mindoro Warty Pig

Oliver's warty pig / Mindoro warty pig

Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence is less than 5,000 km² being its area of occupancy less than 500 km². Even though accurate records are lacking, the distribution range of this pig is severely fragmented. There is also a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat, and in the number of mature individuals caused by over-hunting. Hybridization with free-ranging domestic pigs introduced and maintained by hinterland communities is an additional and likely serious additional threat.

"Doing An Animal That Is So Beloved Is A Real Challenge. You Want To Have It Right Because You Think

"Doing an animal that is so beloved is a real challenge. You want to have it right because you think people might be pickier. It was a really nice experience going further into minimal details trying not just to catch the shape of the animal but also its soul."

As I mentioned to you in my previous post (If you haven't seen it go check it out) I was going to mix things up. Instead of illustrating the whole family at once, I decided to do a couple of families and show a different member every week. I decided to go with the felines because I know how much they are loved but also how challenging they could be. It is my first feline so I struggle with things that none of the other animals I've done has.

Indochinese Tiger

Tigers are a special species. For many years it was thought that they are 9 subspecies. However, the latest studies (2017) demonstrate that they are just two subspecies and each of them is divided by populations of tigers. This is still in debate but most of the books that I checked welcomed this hypothesis. The Indochinese Tiger belongs to the genus panthera tigris tigris along with the Bengal Tiger, the Amur Tiger, and basically, all the tigers that live in Asia land. The other subspecies is the panthera tigris sondaica which are the groups that live in Indonesia. Sumatran Tiger, Bali Tiger, etc.

The Indochinese Tiger was seen in the infamous and today closed Tiger Temple, in Thailand. Where the monks used to drug the tigers, so people can gather around them without any danger. It is also said that they used to sell body parts of the tigers. I must confess that I went to the place ignoring that such horrible things were happening. What a shame. Something to think about. There are more tigers as pets in the United States than in the wild. W.T.F.! StoreInstagram

Domestic Pig

Domestic Pig

It will be a countless list to name all the breeds of domestic pig. Strangely, few of the are extinct such as Yorkshire Blue and White, Small White, or the Small Black, all of them from the United Kingdom. Some others are very rare like the Choctaw Hog, the Mulefoot or the Ossabaw hog, all of them in the United Stats.

The smallest known domestic pig will be the Göttingen minipig, weighing about 26 kilograms as a full-grown adult. and the largest is a breed of China Poland hog, weighing 1,157 kg.

Red River Hog

Red River Hog

I always wanted to see one of this ones. I thought it was like an experiment: A vibrant orange pig with ears like elf and beard. I saw one for the first time in a zoo in Valencia, Spain a few years back.

The species is common, and there are no major threats. The main threat will be the growing pressure from hunting for commercial bushmeat trade. It is one of the most hunted species in the Congo Basin and it makes up 40% of the bushmeat sold on markets in Gabon.

Experiments of raising in captivity have shown its susceptibility to stress during capture, low rate of survival of young (11–57%), but rapid adaptation to confined environment and human company.

Pygmy Right Whale

Pygmy Right Whale

I had no idea this one exists. How awesome can be a small version of a right whale? Here it is, the Pygmy Right Whale.

Not much is known about this animal since is one of the whales that has been studied the less. Often confused at sight with the Minke Whale, observation of the Pygmy Right Whale is rather scarce. Lives in the Southern Hemisphere in waters of temperatures that range from 5 to 20 °C.

Pygmy Killer Whale This One Is Interesting. It Is Not Related To The Killer Whale And Is Not A Whale

Pygmy Killer Whale This one is interesting. It is not related to the Killer Whale and is not a whale but a dolphin. The only thing that is accurate about its name is that it is not very large. Perhaps it should be called just the "Pygmy". However, it is very similar to another dolphin called the Melon-headed whale (we will learn about that one soon).

Not much is known about this 'whale' (I'm not sure if I should call it a whale). It is not typically aggressive in the wild, although there have been reports of aggressive behavior in captivity. Maybe is trying to tell us something.

I Loved To Do This One. I Think The Pose Was Amazing And Challenging And Shows The Nature Of This Magnificent

I loved to do this one. I think the pose was amazing and challenging and shows the nature of this magnificent animal. Thanks so much to Zoran Milutinovic who allowed me to use one of his amazing photographs as a reference. Siberian Tiger / Amur Tiger The Siberian Tiger is my favorite. Lives in cold temperatures so its coat is denser and thicker, making it puffier. It is also one of the biggest, sharing the size with the Bengal Tiger. This combination makes, in my point of view, the most majestic and powerful tiger. Studies demonstrate that Siberian Tigers used to be bigger before the 70s. However, the reduction of its environment mixed with the lack of food that comes with it, obliged them to adapt, reducing its size. This is normal in nature. Animals have to adapt if they want to survive. The problem that I see here is that the time frame is very short (50 years) and I am not so sure if this animal or others will be able to keep the pace. Is facing many threats. poaching, diseases brought by domestic dogs such as canine distemper, habitat destruction, and genetic diversity. At some point, less than 50 tigers remained. Today, the number recovered to about 500 which is good but not enough. ________________________________________________ Credits: Felids and Hyenas of the World: Wildcats, Panthers, Lynx, Pumas, Ocelots, Caracals, and Relatives.  Dr. José R.
