This one took me forever! But I was really into it. I actually animated the illustration once I finished. Check it out and also part of the process and some close-ups of the drawing on my Instagram account.

Masai Giraffe

This one is the largest giraffe of all. 5.5 meters high! This subspecies of giraffe are the tallest animal on earth. That is incredible. They can weigh up to 1.3 Tons and one-third of that weight is in their neck.

Another interesting thing is their tongue which can be 50 cm long. It is prehensile and allows them to grab leaves graciously.

Its numbers have reduced by 50% in the last few decades. Although there are more than 22.000 in the wild, it is alarming that the numbers have plumbed so fast. There have been sights of albino giraffes (white) and also very dark ones (which are really beautiful).

I really enjoyed working on this one¡ It came up smoothly and accurately. I spent more hours than average thought but I feel it paid off. Malayan Tiger This is the last population of this subspecies (The mainland Asian one). It's a medium size tiger that is critically endangered. They used to be abundant in Singapore in 1830 when the country was basically a dense jungle. However, the expansion of plantations along the island made attacks on humans by tigers quite common, so tiger hunting became a sport. Tiger attacks were reported almost daily in the late 1840s, and local authorities organized bounties decreasing the tiger population significantly. The last tiger was shot in 1932. This is probably the most unknown Tapir for me because I always thought that this one and the Amazonic Tapir were the same. Now I can see how different they are. (And you will see as well when I post the Amazonic one). Store Instagram

Baird's Tapir it owns its name to a Naturalist called Fullerton Baird. It is funny how naturalists in general like to name "things" and they think that those "things" didn't have a name before. Well, this one had. Danta, Anteburro, Macho de monte and Mountain Cow just to name a few. It inhabits all of Central America. Not Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, or Missouri, no. I'm talking about real America where in this case, Central America will be that piece of land that unites South with North America and is divided into many countries such as Belice, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama, among others. Also can be found in Colombia and Ecuador. Baird's Tapir is mostly nocturnal and likes to live close to water because they love to take baths. In fact, they are great swimmers. One thing that I found cute about these Tapirs is that they are monogamous, which means that they mate for life. Both parents are in charge of raising their offspring. Because of its size, adults Baird's Tapir's only predators are Crocodiles and Jaguars. However, humans and its actions have put these species in constant decline. Southern Black Rhinoceros It's a subspecies of the Black Rhino that is extinct by 1850. This was due to excessive hunting. Inhabited the south of Africa and according to some skulls and some other remains of the animal, this subspecies is supposed to be the largest.

Incredibly, there was not a single photograph of the animal. Some scientists believed that this subspecies is not extinct and is considered a population that exists in the North of Namibia. New design. What do you think?

Java Mouse Deer

It hasn’t been possible to know the numbers of this animal in the wild because is commonly mistaken with its other member of the family, the Lesser Mouse Deer, which also shares the same environment.

Inhabits in Java and possibly in Bali. However, in Bali, its existence hasn’t been totally validated.

As we can see, the story of this family has just started to be written and I wouldn’t be surprised to see changes in the future when more is known about them. I hope they still are around.

Lesser Mouse Deer

Not much is known about this species. It seems to be an apparent lack of interest to study this family which to me is hard to explain if we count that are the smallest hoofed animals in the world and hasn’t changed much in millions of years. This shows a form of adaptability that is remarkable and that I believe deserves to be studied.

Because very little is known about this animal in general, is hard to assess a truthful census. It’s known to be widely spread in Southeast Asia and is often part of the menu of villagers or even taken as a pet. (Please don’t have one. Let’s leave wild things wild)

Greater Mouse Deer With this animal, I introduce you to the last genus of the family (Tragulus) and the one with the most members of the whole family (5). Classification can be a little bit confusing and I'm still learning.

For now, I can tell that this family (Tragulidae, commonly known as Mouse Deer) is composed of ten members that are classified into three different genus. I wish scientists explain things in an easier way. For sure, more people would get involved. Anyway, this is the largest Mouse Deer of the genus, closely matched by Williamson's mouse-deer (which we will be talking about soon). Also nocturnal and solitary as its relatives. It is widespread in Indonesia and part of Southeast Asia.

Its status is stable, however, loss of habitat and hunting are their main threats. if you have something to add, Awesome!. I'm not an expert so anything that can enrich the post is very welcome. *Photo Reference Credits: ronnienl

Blue Whale

"We must feel lucky to be sharing the world with the biggest animal that ever existed."

Not even the biggest dinosaur is a match for the size of the Blue Whale, the largest animal that ever existed on earth. The largest-ever registered was 33 meters. It is the biggest size the animal can reach in order to function correctly. A fifth subspecies could be a population that inhabits the coasts of Chile. A group with unique vocalization and notable genetic differences.

I must say that whales are fascinating. I still find it hard to wrap the size of this animal. I hope one day I could see one of them. Today is protected because it was heavily hunted almost to its extinction. In 1966, its hunt was banned by the International Whaling Commission. ___________________________

Eden's Whale Little is know about this whale since is thought to be a smaller form of Bryde's Whale and no studies have been done to corroborate this assumption or treat it as a different species. Still, its size can reach up to 11 meters and weigh up to 20 tons. Usually seen in pair or single individuals, still can form groups of 20 animals around feeding areas. Poster Balaenidae and Cetotheriidae Family. Although not related, however similar and for many years thought to belong to the same family, The Pygmy Right Whale is the only extant member of the Cetotheriidae family. Despite its size, The biggest difference from the Balaenidae family is that the Pygmy whale has a dorsal fin and its mouth is not as big in proportion to its body as the other Right Whales. Pygmy Right Whale

I had no idea this one exists. How awesome can be a small version of a right whale? Here it is, the Pygmy Right Whale.

Not much is known about this animal since is one of the whales that has been studied the less. Often confused at sight with the Minke Whale, observation of the Pygmy Right Whale is rather scarce. Lives in the Southern Hemisphere in waters of temperatures that range from 5 to 20 °C.

Right Whales:

The other genus of the Balaenidae family is composed of three species. The three of them are mostly distinguished from each other by distribution or genetic analysis.

The particularity of this genus is the callosities that grow below its mandible that provide the perfect habitat for colonies of whale lice, a form of crustacean, that cannot live in open waters and found this whale the perfect way to travel comfortably. It is a *symbiosis, however, scientists cannot explain concretely why.

Among the three, the Southern Right Whale is the only one that is not in danger, being the North Atlantic Right Whale the one in most critical danger of extinction. This is probably related to its whereabouts which is in areas where humans have been doing whaling for centuries.

I am actually not in total disagreeing with whaling. Not that I will ever participate in such an event or even try something that comes from a whale. However, in some cultures is ingraining for centuries and was extremely important for the survival of humans.

Whaling should be banned today? For us might be a big bold no as an answer because it doesn't affect us at all. But what about if the consumption of chicken or cow is banned? We might say that there is not a relation between both. However, some cultures see the consumption of whales in the way we see the consumption of chicken. Are chicken endangered? Of course not, but the way we are consuming it is putting in danger the whole planet.

Maybe whales are way more charismatic, mysterious and magnificent than chickens but in the end, they both are living beings and if we are going to advocate for one, we should advocate for both. Just to be fair.

*Symbiosis: interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.

Domestic Pig

It will be a countless list to name all the breeds of domestic pig. Strangely, few of the are extinct such as Yorkshire Blue and White, Small White, or the Small Black, all of them from the United Kingdom. Some others are very rare like the Choctaw Hog, the Mulefoot or the Ossabaw hog, all of them in the United Stats.

The smallest known domestic pig will be the Göttingen minipig, weighing about 26 kilograms as a full-grown adult. and the largest is a breed of China Poland hog, weighing 1,157 kg.
