BETTY BUCKLEY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2020 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE TRUMP / PENCE CAMPAIGN To the Trump/Pence Campaign: Despite numerous pleas and a formal cease-and-desist from the composer, you've continued to use my rendition of "Memory" from CATS at your campaign rallies. We must insist that you stop this misappropriation of music and performance that has nothing to do with the representation of your regime. Your presidency, completely devoid of empathy or humanity, is the very antithesis of art. Thanks to your disastrous mishandling of the pandemic, Broadway must remain shuttered until at least May 30, 2021. The same super spreader events at which you blare my recording are undoubtedly exacerbating the problem. So, you are exploiting the work of Broadway artists at events that are may well spread the very virus that is keeping us unemployed in the first place. Of course, this cruel irony shouldn't be surprising; cruelty comes so naturally to you and your enablers. I cannot sit idly by and witness my work being used to promote your fascist agenda. You've even absconded with the words of Dr. Fauci, taken out of context in your campaign ads. And -- despite his protests -- you blunder on in your dismissal of science and common sense for the greater good. I imagine you'll ignore this repeated request to cease and desist, as you've ignored all the requests that preceded it from me, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins and the many other musicians who are as appalled as we are to be associated with your deplorable mendacity and ill behavior. The good news is that we, the voters, have the ultimate say. We will reject you at the polls, and by January the utter hell of your presidency, your criminal enablers and regime will be nothing more than a memory.
