this steller’s jay was spotted in california. normally, steller’s jays have a deep blue body, with a black head and neck. this bird has leucism, a genetic mutation that causes a reduction in pigments. it can present in many different ways; some birds have white patches and a ‘pied’ look, while others look faded like this bird. x

good morning everyone! I have a new all-time favorite work of art, and it’s this early 19thc ivory netsuke in the shape of an INCREDIBLY fat bird
Today’s birds are this Galah pair.
Did you know? The Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) has the longest neck relative to body size out of any swan species!⚫🦢⚫
Its dark plumage, contrasting red eyes, and bright red bill make it easy to identify in the Australian wetlands that it inhabits. This bird can plunge its neck as much as 3.2 feet (1 meter) deep underwater in order to search for food! What’s on the menu? A variety of aquatic vegetation, such as algae and seagrass.
