2047 Apologue

Collaboration between WHITEvoid, Kinetic Lights and director Zhang Yimou incorporates a mechanical array of arrangeable lamps to provide context to a dance performance:

Chinese director Zhang Yimou who is best known for his movies “Raise the Red Lantern”, “Hero” and “The Great Wall” but also for directing the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics returns to the theater stage with his concept perfomance “2047 APOLOGUE”.

Zhang Yimou has unveiled his latest work at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Based on Peking Opera “Sanchakou,” “2047 Apologue” is breaking the form of traditional stage plays, combining Chinese folk art with the latest technology. The show aims to mirror reality, commenting on how science and technology are a huge part of life in the 21st century. The show consists of 8 parts, each combining a traditional chinese craft, music or dance style with modern high tech such as lasers, robots, drones and kinetics.

WHITEvoid was commissioned to create, program and direct the kinetic display for the last part of the show called “Weaving Machine”. The 9 minute performance features 640 motorized LED spheres, an anchient chinese weaving machine and a modern dancer. German motor winch producer KINETIC LIGHTS provided the vertical hoist systems for the LED spheres and control software. Russian RADUGADESIGN animated a complementing video backdrop and CPG Concepts from Hong Kong provided the dance choreography for british dancer Rose Alice.

Research makes robots better at following spoken instructions

A new system based on research by Brown University computer scientists makes robots better at following spoken instructions, no matter how abstract or specific those instructions may be. The development, which was presented this week at the Robotics: Science and Systems 2017 conference in Boston, is a step toward robots that are able to more seamlessly communicate with human collaborators.

Research Makes Robots Better At Following Spoken Instructions

The research was led by Dilip Arumugam and Siddharth Karamcheti, both undergraduates at Brown when the work was performed (Arumugam is now a Brown graduate student). They worked with graduate student Nakul Gopalan and postdoctoral researcher Lawson L.S. Wong in the lab of Stefanie Tellex, a professor of computer science at Brown.

AI Pathfinding - Update

AI Pathfinding - Update

An update on the A* pathfinding system I’m doing for my prototype. I’ve added smoothing to the paths so I get a more natural looking movement. I’ve also added weights, which means I can add a penalty to moving on different surfaces, which the AI will take into account when finding a path.

For example if there is puddle of mud between the unit and its target location (and walking through mud slows the units speed), it will figure out if its better to walk around the mud or walk through it. Another example as shown in the GIF, the grass has a small movement penalty, making the AI prefer to walk along the road instead of straight to the target, despite the path being longer.
