Mirror, mirror on the wall….

Have you ever noticed someone or even you trying to match the same behaviors as someone you’re in close proximity with or even someone you are engaging with in a conversation? Well, you’re not crazy, this is actually pretty common. It’s called the Mirroring effect. In the world of psychology, the mirroring effect occurs when you or another individual matches or ‘mirrors’ the nonverbal gestures the other person is doing because they may find them desirable, they may want to get something from them, etc. Infants and children do this all the time and it’s the main way they learn during those early years. There are also different types of mirroring that counselors, therapists and people helping couples discover how to better communicate with one another and making the relationship stronger.

People also use mirroring in the gym, who knew???! No, not the kind where teens and young adults flex in the mirror and take selfies….that’s a whole other psychological issue. The type of mirroring the goes on in the gym is usually very subtle but I see it all the time. See that huge guy doing those curls over there?? His arms are huge and maybe if you do curls like him, your arms will become just as huge. Lifters and fitness people have this unconscious ballet where they look at someone they want to look like and pick up their mannerisms on how the perform certain exercises and even pick up their speech patterns, how they walk and interact with other men and women.

Don’t believe, I dare you to watch people the next time you visit your gym. You may be surprised by what you observe.

We don’t know what lies on the other side of this world and this life. We won’t know that until the inevitable happens to each of us and I’m just that, it’s a gift. I don’t want to know the date that I’m going to leave this world and pass on to wherever it is that we go. All I know for sure is that I truly try to embrace each and every moment with others that I can now because nobody knows when that final day is going to come. That should be a motivator for all of us to do good, be available for those the we care about and cherish every moment. I’ve heard of people who never get excited about things because if they do and it doesn’t happen, they really don’t lose anything. If something does happen, they take it as a pleasant surprise.

What a terrible way to live life! A friend of mine told me today after chatting for a few minutes that I have one of the most gratifying jobs in the world because I help people who’ve need direction and who for a lot of reasons, have lost hope. What makes life worth living each day for me is to help restore some of that hope back inside of those people I work with. Being able to reach so many lives with the gifts I’ve been given is a testament to the trauma I’ve been through and the richness I’ve found in everyday life and I wish that for all of you as well. Make the most of the time you’ve been given.

As someone who assists people on a daily basis with personal goals, it’s very easy for me to get caught up in helping that person while totally neglecting my own personal needs and problems. My buddy Ben Curtis says that you need to put the proverbial oxygen mask on yourself first before giving it to someone else. You can’t pour from an empty cup either so keep in mind that taking care of yourself before you start taking care of others isn’t selfish, it’s 100% necessary.

Remember, your mental health and your ability to tend after yourself is a sign that you have your priorities straight. There’s nothing sexier about a man or woman than when they take care of themselves mentally as well as physically because if you’re well adjusted, you have that much more time and energy to devote to your partner and helping them.

Dive right in. Don't think about what could go wrong or even what could go right. Put blinders on and wade through the tough stuff because that's what is going to help you grow from whatever the experience may be you're facing. Not having any expectations requires a certain amount of courage and the more you don't set your heart on a certain outcome, the more courage it's going to create within yourself to see it through. Now, go forth into the unknown and come back a winner.
